Petroleum Price Pain & Pleasure

It looks like low gas could be around for a while.  While we love paying $1.80 for gas, the drop could hurt the Texas economy.

Oil & Russia

"Pain at the pump" has become "pleasure at the pump" for Americans as gas prices continue to plummet.  However, the pain was simply transferred to the oil & gas industry.  Energy analysts argue that Saudi efforts to reduce the cost per barrel has many targets with Russia perhaps being the largest.

This has created an economic crisis…

Social Security Reform and Welfare Reform and the bottomless pit they are forming.

Though this was not in a current article in the news today due to over shadowing with other issues, they are still current events to me at least.  This country’s social security and welfare system is killing the economy for starters.  Those of retirement age are not able to sustain life as they did when they were working and or actually retire, due to the minimal social security checks per month.  The monies paid per person (FICA) per year will not be enough to cover…

Drone Violates Citizen's Right to Privacy

A Seattle residence, Linda Pleiss, called police when she noticed a drone with a camera attached to it, hovering outside her 26th floor window. The drone operator later apologized stating a real estate developer hired him to use the drone to survey property in the area. Linda felt her right to privacy had been violated.

The article raises the question of privacy and what privacies the 1st Amendment guarantees? In American Democracy, Chapter 4 (pp.…

New Detention Center for Illegal Immigrant Families

The influx of illegal immigrants crossing our U.S. border has led the White House to decide to make deportation of these law breakers quicker.  A new detention center will be opened in Artesia, New Mexico for families that come across the border illegally.  It will be a safe and clean place to house families while the deportation takes place.  This is one of several that Homeland Security is considering for illegal immigrants with children that cross the border in the Southwest United…

Humanity has always struggled with several inconveniences and there are constantly disagreements on how to deal with them. One of the biggest concerns of societies is how to solve the problem of criminality. The means and methods used sometimes seem contradictory to the way the problem should be properly solved. Some claim that capital punishment is a good way to deter crime and they…

Interactive Video Game Helps?

Some expert and specialist have noticed that some patients respond more actively to interactive video games than other forms of therapy. Interactive video games are games that cause the player to participate by body-movements in order to control the game; such as the Wii and Xbox 360. Interactive video games were suggested as an addition to the regular therapy, not as a…

Oklahoma tornado, one year later: 'Something good's gotta come out of this'

This relates to our study for this class becuase it shows the benefits of having a state government outside the national government. Danni Legg has an opportunity to really have her voice heard in a big way thanks to the freedoms we enjoy in this country.

A year ago today a huge tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma. Several lives were taken from this horrific storm. One in particular is the focus of this article. Christopher Legg a 9-year-old boy was in school like any other day when…

In Utah more 1,000 gay marriages are being finally recognized as real marriages. http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-05-19/nfl-blocks-oprahs-attempt-to-make-michael-sam-a-reality-tv-star502

This article talks about the latest publicity craze surrounding Michael Sam. Oprah has announced that she wants to air a multi-part documentary series on the first openly gay rookie to be drafted in the NFL. This is related to this class because it deals with individual rights, free speech, and freedom of press, and civil rights.

This is just shocking to me. Michael Sam is probably the first ever 7th round draft pick with this much publicity and attention. The world has been making…

Martial Law in Thailand

What better representation of government showing its power as it has done in Thailand. The Military has taken over all security relations in the country. Can you imagine living in a place with such unrest? Some people may thing America is headed this way but the reality of this happening is pretty slim. I feel thankful to live in a place where we don't have soldiers at intersections and have to worry if our ill advised stare is met with a bullet. You can demonstrate all you want as long as…

Issue of Abortion

Abortion is an issue that deals with rights of citizens and the observation of established laws. When the question of "should abortion be legal?" is posed,  it is a wonder that so few people see it as murder. Our society puts anyone who kills another human being without just cause in prison, but yet a baby can be aborted before the age of 24 weeks and no one even blinks an eye. When was it that government began to…

In Jerusalem there is starting to be a huge conflict with keeping old religious ways and laws. Every sun down Friday to sun up Saturday everything is shut down for the Sabbath. These are the traditional ways of the Ultra- Orthodox Jews, when it comes to rules they are very strict. But it seams that the younger generation is rebelling and finding a new way of living life. They do not agree with the Sabbath and would like for everything to stay open for them. Nonreligious people stood…

#BringOurGirlsBack

The relevance to the course due to the responsibilities our President handles other injustices with our allies in showing his character to be a strong leader.  In the article, “U.S. to help Nigeria bring back kidnapped girls,” written by the Newsela staff addresses the current “international outrage” which occurred on the day of April 15, 2014. Nigeria is under immense pressure where as a country turned to the United States for assistance to free the three hundred teenage girls who were…

Nigerian Girls - US Response

As frustration confusion and heart-break is mounting over the situation in Nigeria, the US is left wondering what its position in the situation is. Obviously the gut reaction is to get involved as quickly as possible in order to free as many kidnapped young women as possible. This response seems logical and is what almost everyone would like. Conversely, it is difficult for the US to justify getting involved in a situation in a nation as unstable as Nigeria. Implications of involving…
