This is the neatest website I have ever come across in my research on city planning and development.  The website is called plaNYC 2030.  There are all kinds of different links and plans shown to the reader about the goals for city life in New York by the year 2030.  When I clicked on the link that lead to housing and Neighborhoods, it gave the number nine million.  In 2030, there will be more than that many people living in New York City.  That absolutely blows my mind! How in the world can anyone plan for that grown and find a way to make room for that many new residents.  Hats off to the city planning boards and coordinators.  I found it interesting to see exactly how they mapped out what they will do to allow more residents: "We must direct growth to more transit-oriented parts of this city.  We do this by increasing allowable densities at appropriate locations in areas of the city near transit and decreasing them in more auto-dependant areas." If this is possible, it truly is genius.  I cannot imagine how to plan to settle neighborhoods.  The thought is exactly what we have learned about in class dealing with TOD.  Transit-oriented development is not only authentic to certain areas and walker-friendly, it is also a way to allow for more residents in the same amount of space.  Less cars in the area of New York city is obviously going to have to be in the future with 9 million citizens living in the great city.  Another interesting thing pointed out in this article on housing was that a goal is to make sure that neighborhoods become the hub for entertainment AND work.  This will cut down on the need for any transit and residents will have everything they need right next to their homes.
