Why are Republicans and Democrats So Divided?

This topic of the separation of parties is relevant to our class because the material covered today was about how the republican and democratic parties are separated.

Have you ever wondered why the Republican party and the Democratic party are so divided? Both parties believe and hold to very conflicting opinions. In reality, there really wasn't much conflict until after the 50s and 60s. So what happened? Well, after the Cold War both parties started to drift apart and were at conflict with each other. Both parties tend to disagree on about everything, especially sensitive topics like immigration.

I chose this article because I find it very interesting. It was very surprising to me that at one point in time, both parties actually got along and weren't so adverse to each other.

I would address this problem by trying to bring both parties closer together. That doesn't mean agreeing on everything, but at least respect each other's opinions. Faith influences my response by loving my brother's and sister's in Christ, even if their opinion contradicts my own.

Rachel, I find it very interesting too at how far we have come since the 50s and the 60s, where it seemed like both parties had much more respect for one another. After reading your article I believe that a significant part of the reason we have so many ugly disagreements today can definitely be contributed to a loss of respect. I believe that now in life, we tend to completely disregard other people's opinions and beliefs before even trying to understand them or where they are coming from. In addition, as the washingtonpost.com article states, I too believe the media plays a significant role in fueling the fire between disagreeing parties.

As Christians, we should reflect Christ and have patience with one another in these circumstances. The Bible says to be slow to speak, and I think today that is something America has a big problem with. Personally, I hope that in my own life I can learn to respect those who I disagree with, and that as a country we are able to address disagreements with respect.
