According to recent news, Obama shortened sentences for 102 more federal inmates. As his eight years in office is coming to a close he is still trying to do what he thinks is best for the country. In total he has shortened a total of 774 sentences with 590 of them being this year. Thirty four of them had life sentences. Although most of the prisoners were convicted of non violent crimes they were in prison for position of cocaine, methamphetamine, other drugs, firearms violations in connection to drug trafficking, possession or sales. All the prisoners won't be immediately released but released under the future president's term in office.
I do believe that some sentences can be extreme on prisoners. Some of them have locked up for too long but the fact that he shortened almost 600 sentences in the past year is a bit odd. I wonder if they truly took the time to investigate each inmates case to determine the appropriate action. The inmate was given their sentence for a reason. Did the Obama administration look at all the facts? Did they look at the inmates criminal history? Did they analyze every determinate and factor in almost 800 early releases?
Given the case of Arlana Doris Moore, of Grand Falls, Texas. She had been serving a life sentence plus 10 years of supervised release after being convicted of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and possession of chemicals used to make the drug. Moore's sentence will now expire in late 2018, on the condition that she enrolls in a residential drug treatment program. Not knowing her history i feel like this is some what acceptable. If the inmates that are being released early have some sore of strict guideline to follow after being released then I can be at peace with the action. Luckily, for the most part, inmates that have a history of violent crimes aren't on this almost 800 person list. I do believe there could be a slight reform on the judiciary side of determining a sentence for inmates, but lets take our time in releasing convicts and make sure it's the right thing to do that pleases God.
