The new stadium being built for the Las Vegas Raiders has run into a few issues that might delay its completion. The biggest obstacle, according to the article, is that staffing reductions implemented during the Great Recession have not been refilled. This has been compounded by the fact that the city is in the midst of 35 major construction projects over the next 5 years. This is a significant increase over the 22 projects over the last 4 years.
The county plans to use additional financing gathers from fuel taxes and sales taxes to assist with the project. In addition, the public works department director said that they will increase their use of consultants to further speed up the process. However, some worry that permits and surveys will take longer than proposed deadlines anticipated.
There has also been increased interest in hiring private developers. One proposed solution was to have private developers pay higher application fees to have their business considered sooner and then use this increased revenue to hire more staff for the public works department. Though not implemented yet, this option has shown some promise among both government officials and the private developers.
I find it interesting that the city would allow so many public works projects to pile up on them without ensuring proper staff were in place to complete them. This seems short-sighted to me. However, the article says that the program administrators remain committed to finishing these projects on time. Only time will tell if they are successful.
