The Belfast and LondonDerry  Peace Walls were put up during the Troubles to separate the sectarian groups. They created a barrier that cut down on tit-for-tat attacks that wee common in the day. They make it harder for petrol bombings and allow the two communities to coexist. The walls are a major part of infrastructure that keep the traffic of the two communities separate.

This article looks at the call for them to be taken down. There is a sentiment that they are archaic and only create sectarian tension. In the current climate, most republicans and loyalists may not agree with each other on political aspects, but want to have peace. The structures are a scar of the city. With time they will be taken down, but the people must be ready to move on.
